Kota Kayang Museum

The Kota Kayang Museum is the place to go first if you want to understand why Perlis looks the way it does. It occupies the former residence of the British adviser, on about four hectares near Kuala Perlis, and became the state museum in 1991.

There are three galleries. The general gallery covers the building of Kota Kayang itself along with the working objects of Perlis life — farming, fishing and carpentry tools, and the household goods of the aristocracy. The archaeological gallery holds finds from excavations across the state, including Neolithic material and evidence of Hoabinhian culture recovered from Perlis's limestone caves. The third traces the royal genealogy, with a replica of the bunga mas — the golden flower sent as tribute — and material on the colonial period.

There are over 300 objects in total, and admission is free.

The royal mausoleum grounds are adjacent, and the floating market is a few minutes away.
