Taman Bunga Kertas Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen

The bougainvillea garden behind Hotel Seri Malaysia in Kangar is small, free and much better than it needs to be. Bunga kertas — paper flower — is the Malay name for bougainvillea, and the garden collects a wide range of varieties and colours in one compact, well-tended space.

It is laid out for walking slowly: paths between the beds, seating, and enough shade to make a midday visit tolerable. Photographers get the most out of it, particularly in the first hour after sunrise when the colour is strongest and the light is not yet flat.

Because it sits in central Kangar it works as a short stop rather than a destination — twenty or thirty minutes is enough to see it properly, and it is a few minutes from Bukit Lagi and Masjid Alwi.

The garden carries the name of Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen, the Raja Perempuan of Perlis.
